Outdoor Wednesday  Kansas Wild Sunflowers and Wheat fields

Welcome to my FILs place.  A couple of weeks ago I shared some of the pictures from our trip home to help with harvest.  These are more from that trip.

Can you feel the breeze?  I say you're not in Kansas if the wind isn't blowing.

It is said that Kansas is flat, that is true of the upper half of the state.
The family farm is in the area that is much more hilly.
These are called the Kansas Gypsum Hills 

I love these carved tree stumps on the old farm place shown below

This farm house isn't being lived in right now.
 Dad plants and harvests the fields for the 93 year old man who owns it for a percentage of the crop.

I hope you enjoyed your visit to a part of Kansas you might not have seen before.

Blue Monday, bird mailbox.


First I want to say thanks to Sally's granddaughters for letting us know that Sally who hosts Blue Monday is in ICU.  Continue to keep her in your prayers for a full recovery.

Today I want to share my mail box at one of our former homes.  I miss the cuteness of it... we just have a plain black one now so I new to get busy and paint a new one!

The cream and blue matched our house.
 After painting it I used and outdoor clear varnish to keep it from fading.

Please HELP!  Outdoor Wednesday Question...

I have 3 gardens one at the front of the house which is roadside and two at the back of the house which are lake side.  

This week I found this metal fountain in the trash!

I know it hasn't been cleaned up yet.

 I did ask before I loaded it in the car, says it works. 

Time will tell!

This past week I was blessed to go with my honey out to his parents to help bring in the harvest.   

Oh by the way... Dad is 83!

On the trip we stopped and saw this nest built into 

a rose bush at the side of a gas station. 

 I was amazed it was so low but grateful.  

What a fun chance to see this new born robin and get a great close up. Momma was close by and very anxious for us to leave. 

If you look close you can see the second one breaking

 through its shell. If you click on the picture you can see so much detail.  Love the little bit of fuzz on this baby's head and back.

We had a rather  tough year this year.  With three combines we had two down most of the week.  We had a huge storm come through on Thursday that put a stop to work for 2 days.  We had 2 and 1/2 inches of rain plus hail.  After one round of rain we saw this beautiful promise that God will take care of us.  

I tried to get several shots.  The top one of the cattle chute.

This shot is over the fence.  I love the shadows on the cut field.  You can see a second rainbow at the far left if you look close!

Faithful Ole Blue is one of the two trucks dad has to haul grain.

Pink Saturday a trip to Chicago..

About 3 weeks ago my WH (wonderful hubby) and I took a trip to Chicago.  He had a conference to attend.  We went a day early and just spent it walking and enjoying the Navy Pier and some of the city.  This is a couple of the pictures we took. At the Navy Pier there is a stained glass exhibit.  After finally figuring out how to turn my flash off I got a few good pictures.  I Loved the pink in the first one  but I cant figure out where the white square came from.

We thought this sigh was fitting since WH was leaving for Shanghai the next Sat.

Sweet Lemon Basil Pesto

It feel so good to actually start harvesting some of the fruits of our labor!  I have a "gone wild" Lemon Basil in my flower garden Should have used pots!  It is about 3 foot in diameter and at least 2 foot tall!  Well it WAS, until I cut it Monday.  I was able to share some with a neighbor and made yummy pesto.  My son gave me the idea of freezing it in ice cube trays then put them in a baggie. This way I can make more and use it throughout the year.  He said because it has olive oil you can pop one into a pan for fish or into your micro wave to use on breads or pasta!  I now have 40 cubs of pesto. All that from one cutting.  The recipe calls for pine nuts which I did use but they are really expensive, $6. for 1 cup.  It says you can substitute walnuts but would it taste the same?

First I cut off all the leaves then used my spinner to wash them and get them dry.

I TRIED using a blender because I don't own a food processor but ended up borrowing a friends.  The blender just didn't do the job.

My sister Ann at Tin and Sparkle made me this cutting board.  Perfect for serving bread or cheeses.

A friend gave the a set of 4 small dishes and  the olive oil dispenser.  I love the bright red.








When  served  with bread you can add a bit more olive oil and it will spread better and of course go farther!
